On this episode of the podcast show, I dig deeper into the 12XU label run by Gerard Cosloy in Austin, Texas. Cosloy is a veteran of the independent label and underground music scene in the U.S., dating back to his days working at Homestead Records and self-publishing his Conflict zine in the 1980s, to later co-running the influential Matador Records label from the start of the 1990s through to this day. 12XU was started in the early 2000s by Cosloy as a means to release albums he was passionate about, but for various reasons, didn’t necessarily fit within Matador’s scope and focus. In its roughly 25 years of operation, 12XU has issued well over 150 titles, with some recent personal favorites being from artists such as The Gotobeds, Mope Grooves, Water Damage, Lewsburg, Weak Signal, and several others.
This past week, I had a chance to speak with Gerard about the beginnings of 12XU and how the label has evolved over the years. We also discussed his weekly radio show on East Village Radio, his new solo release under his given name, his thoughts on the current state of independent labels and music, and other topics.
