FFFoxy Podcast #122: Glenn Donaldson feature

On this installment of the podcast, we dig into the jingling world of The Skygreen Leopards, Jewelled Antler and beyond with Glenn Donaldson. For the past two decades, Donaldson has been an active presence in underground and experimental music circles, contributing to numerous group efforts including Mirza, The Blithe Sons, Thuja, Flying Canyon, and The Art Museums to name but a few. Over the years he also has recorded under various solo monikers such as The Birdtree, FWY!, The Reds, Pinks and Purples, and The Ivytree, a project that also recently had a new archival LP release out on Recital. Donaldson was the co-founder of the aforementioned Jewelled Antler, a name applied to both a collective of like-minded musicians and to the influential DIY label that he ran with Loren Chasse that focused primarily on handmade, CD-R editions. In its roughly five years of operation, Jewelled Antler and its related projects created a distinctive soundworld and approach that incorporated elements of folk, pop, drone, and psychedelia using traditional and home-built instruments set within the sounds of nature itself, periodically referred to as “nature psych”.

I recently had a chance to speak with Glenn about several of the projects that he has been involved in over the years, which you’ll hear segments of throughout this show. I’ll admit, though, that we only scratch the surface of his output over the show’s two hours. Honestly, I think we’d need to do another two, maybe three, full shows to cover all of his creative activities. To paint a fairly comprehensive picture, though, you’ll hear tracks from many of the Glenn’s various projects, and he also selected some other tracks to play by artists that were influential during his Jewelled Antler years. I really hope you enjoy this episode. Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or comments. As always, thanks for looking and listening.
