It’s been a couple of months since we last posted the playlists for the weekly Free Form Freakout show and A LOT has happened in that span of time. We experienced several brutally cold and snowy days here in Minnesota; we enjoyed great new albums by the likes of Headroom, Leighton Craig, and Tim Presley’s…
On this episode of the podcast, we dig deeper into Reading Group, a label based in New York City and co-run by Derek Baron and Emily Martin, who also collaborate together in the recording project Permanent Six Flags. You’ll hear selections from almost every release that they have put out since starting the label in…
With all of the snow days that we’ve been experiencing around these parts over the past few weeks, it has given me plenty of time to listen through a bunch of music that has been piling up in the Free Form Freakout bunker. Fortunately, there was a little window of opportunity for me to make…
On this episode of the podcast, we dig deeper into the excellent New York City-based, Ever/Never Records, a label focused on various strains of sub-underground rock activity, or in the label’s own tongue-in-cheek words: “Specializing in music for adults.” I chat with label owner, Josh Gordon, about the history of the imprint, about some of…

Whether you’re big on resolutions or not, for me there’s still something always exciting about turning the page and heading into a new year with a sense of renewal and new possibilities. I’m hoping you’re feeling that way heading into 2019, too. I had considered doing some type of year-end recap…
Two months have passed since we last posted the playlists for the weekly version of Free Form Freakout. A lot has went down in that time: another successful KMSU Fall Pledge Drive, the release of the newly remastered version of The Beatles’ White Album, our annual holiday show, recaps of some of our favorite albums,…
With spare time being in short supply for me these days, I’m going to simply offer up a bare bones, blurb-less list of some of my favorite albums, tapes, and reissued & archival releases of the year. I questioned whether maintaining these categories was even necessary at this point, as in my mind tapes are…
I know it’s that time of year where many places are starting to wind down activities and look back on the various releases and other happenings from throughout the course of the year. While I’ll likely do some type of year-end write-up on the Free Form Freakout website in the coming weeks, I’m still working…
