It’s been a bit of a rough stretch since I last posted our playlists here. In that time, we lost two of our favorite songwriters in Daniel Johnston and David Berman. I can still remember the first time I heard Daniel Johnston’s music. It was in January of 1995 when Pearl Jam took over the local airwaves for what they called Self-Pollution Radio. Sprinkled within the live sessions, interviews, and Seattle-centric playlist was this rickety, but catchy-as-hell song called “Walking the Cow” that I couldn’t get out of my head for months on end. It took a while to track down his music in those days, but it was made easier once I figured out it was Daniel Johnston and not Danielle Johnson. I’ve been a fan ever since and find his music as moving today as it was when I first heard that song over 25 years ago. I also discovered the Silver Jews music during the mid-90’s through their connection to Pavement, who I was a big fan of at the time. I recall picking up The Natural Bridge album at Roadrunner Records in Minneapolis, taking it back to my shared apartment, and being immediately struck my David Berman’s lyrics and deadpan humor. I was lucky if I could afford even a few CDs & records each month back in those days, so I listened to that one constantly and continued to return to Berman’s music over the years. I feel like his recent Purple Mountains release, though, may well be the best album he ever produced, and that’s saying something. I’m saddened by the loss of these two immensely talented artists, but I’m so very grateful that they left behind a wealth of music, art, and writing that we can continue to turn to and that will surely maintain their legacy for years to come.
