With spare time being in short supply for me these days, I’m going to simply offer up a bare bones, blurb-less list of some of my favorite albums, tapes, and reissued & archival releases of the year. I questioned whether maintaining these categories was even necessary at this point, as in my mind tapes are just as much a legitimate “album” as anything else and many releases filed under “reissue” are often totally new to me anyways, but for the sake of tradition I’ll keep these distinctions in place for at least another year. It should be noted that all of the releases included in these lists have been played on the Free Form Freakout radio & podcast show at some point during the year, or in the case of a few newly acquired titles, soon will be. There might be a couple of things that technically came out in the closing month of the previous year, but I’m confident that anyone reading this isn’t up for splitting hairs over release dates on limited edition tapes of fringe music (at least I hope not). Combing back through the playlists for the show, though, these were the releases that really stood out to me in one way or another and were the ones that I know occupied a good chunk of my listening time. I didn’t include anything that I put out on Round Bale Recordings this year, but the four releases that came out on the label were obviously very near and dear to me as well. With that, I encourage you to click through the links provided for each release, and if you discover something you like, to try and support these artists and labels in whatever way you can. As always, thanks for looking and for listening.
